Do you use a Standby Generator?
Many people use backup electric generators for emergency power. You should know and take proper steps before using a generator.
An electric generator wired directly into a building’s electrical system MUST have a transfer safety swtich to prevent electricity from traveling back through the power lines ,or whats called “back feed”.
If you use portable you should follow these safety tips :
- Never plug a portable generator into a wall outlet or connect to a home’s wiring.
- Read and follow all manufacturers instructions.
- Make sure it is properly grounded.
- Always keep the genrator outside in a dry,protected area, away from windows or air intakes where deadly exhaust fumes can enter living spaces.
- Do not overload the generator by plugging in more appliances then the generator is rated to handle.
- Use only safety-tested ,shop type electrical cords designed and rated for heavier outdoor use.
- Turn off the generator and allow to cool before refueling.
- Before shutting down a generator turn off and unplug all appliances and equipment being powered by the genrator.
If you follow these tips then you should be safe and have emergency power in times of need.
