Instructions for Wheel Installation and Tire Mounting
some tips for the novice and the pro
1. Install each wheel (without tire) to insure proper fit clearances and correct lug nuts.
2. Spring clip retainers, brake drum rivets and/or
balancing weights may interfere with proper fit. If necessary, remove or grind down as required to allow a flush fit. (You can balance wheels and brake drums as a unit after wheels and tires are installed on car.)
3. Special important notes:
(A) Some wheels may require spacers to clear disc brake components. With or without spacers, stud to nut hex head penetration after wheel is installed, in any case must be a least equal to the diameter of the stud.
(B) Mag lug nuts and bolts are designed for proper fitment of the wheel which they accomodate. If other mag lug nuts or bolts are used, be sure they match. Particularly as relating to shank length. If spacers or adaptors are used, longer shank length lug nuts and bolts may be mandatory for safe vehicle operation.
(C) Excessive remaining stud length after wheels are installed may cause lug nuts to bottom out. Use longer lug nuts if this occurs to avoid bottoming out condition.
4. When monting tire on wheel, use custom wheel adaptor which maker of your tire changer recommends. Be sure hold down cone is secure and position wheel properly on changer.
5. Use cloth between tire tool and wheel to prevent mars and scratches. Also use cloth on base of tire changer if chrome plated, painted or machined front of wheel rests on base of machine.
6. Install tires with “narrow side” of rim up and put one bead on at a time. Use tire mounting fluid if necessary.
7. Follow recommended tire seating pressure.
8. Use recommended rubber valve stems.
9. Or use recommended steel valve stems.
10. NOTE: Use tire manufacturer’s rim width recommendedations for wheel and tire selection. It is
recommended that all four fender clearances be checked after mounting first tire.
11. Clean studs of rust and dirt and be sure they are dry (without lubrication) and not stripped before mounting wheel.
12. Thin wall sockets are recommended on mags and spokes.
13. With 5-5/12 and 6-5 1/2 bolt circles on Bullet wheels only, use a swivel socket on lug nut wrench after starting nuts or bolts by hand, in order to clear sides of mounting pad well.
14. Impact wrenches are not recommended due to the possibility of over or under tightening. Lug nuts or
bolts should be started by hand to avoid cross threading and tightened progressively in a criss/cross
manner to insure uniform pressure and prevent wheel misalighment.
15. Use recommended torque rating in ft/lbs. for specific lug nut/ bolt sizes.
16. Retorque lug nuts/bolts after the first 25 miles.
17. Use a non-metallic tool (i.e. rubber hammer) to tap on snap-on center caps to avoid dammage.
18. Follow normal balancing procedures. On mag wheels use adhesive weights and on chrome and steel wheels
use either adhesive or clip-on weights.
19. ALWAYS PROTECT YOUR WHEELS
