Of course, your product and price must be appealing after they find you, but assuming that this is the case, the more visitors that you get to your site, the more business you can expect.
There are ways through Pay-per-click and shopping channels to get more people to your site immediately, but this will cost money and must be monitored carefully so that the return that you receive is worth the cost.
To get more business with no additional cost per visitor, you must get better “organic” search engine ranking (the free kind). There are a lot of tricks that webmasters and SEO companies employ to get top ten rankings on sites like Google and Yahoo, but there are some things that you can do to get good search engine rankings on your own.
The first thing that you need to know is that the big search engines like to see information rich sites. If you are looking for something on Google, you will see in many cases, the highest organic ranked sites have information about what you are looking for. When you build or remodel your website, plan to have as many pages as possible that give information about the products that you sell.
Having a lot of information on your site is not just good for your ranking on search engines. Your customers will be more likely to purchase from you if they know more about you and your products. Even things that you may think are very obvious are good for you to include. What is obvious to you may be new information to someone else.
As you get new information or new products, add the information to your site so that there will be new things for your customers to read. Search engines “crawl” your site on a regular basis and they like to see changes because this tells them that this is an active site.
As you add your information, use the Meta tags to make it easier for search engines to index your pages. If you are not familiar with Meta tags, you should read about them. Basically, they are lines of text that don’t show up on your website pages but they are a summery of what the page is about.
Besides content, the next most important thing to getting a good ranking is relevant links to your site from other sites. You can ask other webmasters to add you to their link page for adding them to your links page. You will have links to your site if you sell your items on another site that links back to yours.
The key is that they are links from sites that have something to do with similar types of products. A bunch or links from totally unrelated sites will not help your ranking and may actually hurt.
The two big things that search engines want to see are information and links. If you increase both of these on your site, you will increase your ranking with search engines. If you increase your rankings with search engines, you will increase your visitors and your business.
