Know the difference between Chainsaw Only
This can be confusing to most shoppers. There are many, many great carvers selling on . Some do all the carving of the sculpture with ONLY chainsaws. Others use a wide variety of tools after they take the bulk of the wood out with a chainsaw. If the method matters to you, DO NOT be afraid to ask the seller, most of them will be more than honest with you.
Chainsaw carving in the U.S. is reaching it’s climax right now. There is a fairly even division between the artists who use only chainsaws and those who incorporate other tools into their artistry. The exclusively chainsaw created carvings are generally torched to remove wood frays and the coated with a combination of paint, stain, poly and or spar urethane to protect them.
Chainsaw carvings are just that–carved with chainsaws–not started with chainsaws and finished with hand carving toos, sandpaper, dremels, foredoms, angle grinders and such. Those creations tend to lend themselves to the “carving world” but not the “Chainsaw Carving World”.
If technique doesn’t matter to you, that is all fine and well, but please be a knowledgeable consumer who is aware of the differences between chainsaw art and a woodcarving. Have a great day:-)
