Make rich flowerbeds without buying expensive soil
To landscape a new yard with nothing but grass or to maintain an established yard is always going to be expensive. As a gardener myself I try to save as much as I can and use prooven technics to get the best results with no or almost no costs.
Most people don’t have the patience nor the mood to cultivate a compost bin and they also don’t want to spend a few hundred Dollars into a compost tumbler.
So how do you get a wonderful compost without having a compost bin or a compost tumbler?
First collect newspaper as much as you possibly can. Then chose a place in your yard, where you want to have flowerbeds. You can even chose a grassy area. All you need to do is to till it with a hand tiller to losen the ground. You also can use a gas tiller for larger areas, but make sure, you don’t till too deep, because of the dormant weeds, that are deep in the ground. (You don’t want to awake them)
The best time to start this project is late fall or winter, so you have your composted beds ready in spring.
Once the ground is tilled, cover it with 3-4 layers of newspaper. The second layer can be anything from grass clippings to old leaves or any organic matter. You also can mix in your organic kitchen waste. This layer can be as much as 5 inch high, the more the better. Then cover everything with a thin layer of soil. You can use topsoil or ordinairy gardensoil from an other place in your yard, it doesn’t matter. When all the layers are finished, water heavily, lean back and wait for the earthworms to appear.
Earthworms love newspaper, coffee grind and coffee filters. They will eat themselves through the layers and absorb it as compost. After appr. 3-4 months your beds will be ready to plant.
To enrich your soil in existing beds you can dig some holes into the ground around your plants and always fill them up with kitchen waste (organic only).
