How to measure your dog for clothing, apparel and accessories for proper size requires precise measuring.

Since dogs vary in breed and size, you cannot accurately chose apparel based on breed or weights. There are no set standards, only guidelines.

Shopping for dog clothes also varies by brands, similar as clothes for for people. Some brands will run smaller or larger than others. This is why different sizing guides will vary slightly from one vendor to another.

Many vendors do not offer exchanges on pet clothing items and for good reason, “health reasons”. Parvo for example is highly contageous and deadly.

Fabric measuring tapes are best for getting accurate measurements.

The two most important measurements are: the length of the back..measure from the base of the neck, typically where the collar sits, to the base of the tail.

The chest size is very important, by measuring the widest part of the girth or chest just behind the front legs. Preferably measure while they are standing. Add 2 inches for a comfortable fit.
